Yucca and Agave Care Guide
Welcome to Your Yucca & Agave Care Guide
Thank you for choosing Big Bend Yucca Company! We’re excited to help you grow a strong, healthy, and beautiful plant that thrives for years to come. Whether you’re new to desert plants or a seasoned gardener, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know — from planting and watering to long-term care — so your yucca or agave can settle in and flourish in its new home.
When Your Plant Arrives
Your yucca or agave will arrive bare root. For the best results, plant it as soon as possible after delivery.
If you can’t plant right away, store your plant in a cool, shaded area.
Never let an unboxed plant sit in direct sunlight — this can cause serious damage.
Before your plant arrives, it helps to choose your planting spot and have the hole pre-dug and ready. This will make planting quick and stress-free for both you and your plant.
Watering Schedule
Watering properly is the key to establishing a healthy root system.
- Right after planting: Give your plant a deep watering.
- First week: Water every day.
- Weeks 2–4: Water two to three times per week.
- After one month: Water once a week for the rest of the first summer.
Do not allow your plant to dry out completely.
A common myth is that yuccas and agaves don’t need water when getting established — this is not true. While they’re naturally tough and drought-tolerant, they need consistent moisture during their first growing season to develop strong, healthy roots.
If your region is experiencing an extended drought, it may take two to three years for your plant to develop a fully mature root system.
Adapting to Your Climate
Because we ship plants nationwide, watering requirements will vary depending on your location and current weather.
Use your common sense and local experience:
- If it’s raining often, reduce watering.
- If it’s hot and dry, increase watering and check soil moisture more frequently.
Remember — the care you give your plant during the first year sets the foundation for how well it will grow and perform over time.
